Jos & Lars Vercammen: 1st National Chateauroux 22.828 Youngsters & fastest against 33,134 pigeons.

By Stefan Mertens

Vremde “Mustang” is how he’s named, the national winner from Chateauroux 22,828 Youngsters.  By hearing “Mustang”, I immediately thinks about a beautiful strong hors and also the beautiful bolides of the famous mark Ford, whose showpiece for many years, was the famous “Mustang”… On the loft of Jos and Lars Vercammen, they also have another “showpiece” by the name of “Mustang”.  This beautiful cock honoured his name, besides the fact that he’s beautiful in the hand and has very strong wings, which he needed to score at the highest level.  When we take a look at the map with the 10 fastest pigeons from Chateauroux, we notice that there was a strong western wind, which blew most pigeons to the east side of Belgium, like the two national winners with the old and the yearling birds.  This being said makes the result of the fastest pigeon of the race - “Mustang” – even more unique!  Jos and Lars Vercammen certainly can be proud of their national winner!

This father-son combination already scores on a high level for years and every year again; they know how to confirm themselves with a special result.  In 2009, they succeed to beat 37.095 Youngsters from Bourges with 1st and 2nd National. Last year, they did it again with 1st and 2nd National Gueret… and again this year, they have a super season with already 3 zonal and 5 provincial victories! A few weeks ago, they beat all competitors on the race from Limoges II with 1st, 2ne and 3rd provincial with the old birds and 1st & 2nd provincial with the yearlings.  They had the 5 fastest pigeons of the province of province of Antwerp on a very difficult Limoges… All unique results!

Pigeon sport… Family sport

The wonderful thing about the Vercammen loft is that the pigeon sport is a family thing.  Already for years, Jos practices the sport and now he’s assisted every day by his son Lars.  Even with his university degree, he chose for the pigeon sport instead of the business.  You could say that he does it all like a true CEO.  We also have to mention his sister Ilke, who helps out where she can and she really loves the birds.

The system with the young birds

The group of youngsters is divided in two; the oldest and the youngest.  They all were darkened till the second week of June and throughout the season; they’re played with the sliding door.  Even if they were darkened, it’s remarkable that the youngsters already dropped more pinions.  The reason must be because they didn’t get into the basket that often, not as much as the previous years. In the past, the young cocks and hens got together before basketing for extra motivation but they don’t do this anymore.  Now they prefer to put the young birds in the basket as calm as possible.  Every two weeks, Lars drives the youngsters for some kilometres so they have some extra training.  To Lars and Jos, it’s important that the pigeons are well trained before the season starts.  When we ask about the preparation, they told us that this year the young birds did 2 x Quievrain, Noyon and last week Pont (250km).  From Pont, they had to leave for Chateauroux, according to Jos it’s a risk but because of the bizarre preparation with several bad races, they had to take this risk.  Normally, the oldest team will have to race till Argenton and so they will have done 2 till 3 national races.  Already all season long, their youngsters are in good health.  They didn’t have any problem with the “One eye cold” or other illnesses.

B14-6175237 - "Mustang": 1st National Chateauroux 22.828 Youngsters and fastest against 33.134 pigeons.

“Mustang” already was a favourite for several weeks.  In the preparation races, he already went along for training but he always arrived first! He left for Chateauroux as 64th signed of 86 youngsters but this was just to make it all easier.  The young birds always are put in large baskets… As we already mentioned before, they don’t get to see their hens.

Nevertheless, “Mustang” was extra motivated.  Last week, when he arrived home from Pont; Lars put a box on the loft and the first one who disappeared in the box was “Mustang” and his hen.  When we look at the origins of this bird, we notice that he’s a product out of the best strains of the Vercammen loft.
