When we talk about one of the most successful combinations on the short distance races then we come to one name and that is Stickers-Donckers. All the obtained top results are not the work of two fanciers but of a whole team behind this name. On one hand we have Gust Stickers and Dirk Donckers but also the son of Dirk, Seppe, is a super motivated fancier and of course we cannot forget to work of Cindy who toss the birds and do everything about administration. Everybody knows his task.
The racing season 2014 was probably their best season ever. You must say it as it is…when you classify yourself 6 times between the national champions and national ace bird nominations…then it is very hard to do better.
Dirk: “It will be very hard to do better next season…but we will do everything to do better. Every year a fancier makes mistakes and it is up to the fancier to correct this mistake. For example…in 2014 we went to the middle distance with some hens that were not capable to fly weekly 400km races. They were more sprint origin…next season we will make sure that we have the capable birds on the right lofts for the right distance.

BREEDING LOFT

On the breeding loft we have every year between 35 and 40 breeding couples. These are all proven performing birds and proven breeders out of our old base and brothers/sisters of our best birds. Till now we did not invest a lot in “strange blood”.
Normally seen a bird has to perform 3 years, as young birds, as a year bird and as a 2-year old bird. Afterwards the best birds are moved to the breeding loft. But this year we had too many good performing 2-years birds so it is impossible to give them all a box on the breeding loft. Only two 2-years and ace bird “Jackpot” will be moved to the breeding loft.

What about the race team during winter time?

We race our birds all following the traditional widowhood system but when we do winter breeding we couple our best widower’s cocks against our best widower’s hens. By handling so we can see if the racers have also breeding capacities.
Our race team is coupled one week after our breeders, mostly around December 1st. When the babies are 17-18 days old, the babies are moved together with the hens to the young bird section. In this way we avoid laying the hens a second time.
When the babies are weaned, about end of January, the widowers may train immediately daily around the loft. The first week they can train when they want but after two weeks we oblige them to train minimum 1 hour. We do just the same with the racing hens.
Our race birds train only once a day. We have too many groups who need to train so it is impossible to let everybody train twice a day. Our 43 widower’s cocks are divided in 4 groups and our 41 widowers hens are divided in 2 groups. Every group trains separately.

What about the race hens

The loft of the race hens is divided into 3 sections. We have 2 sections with boxes and 1 section with an open aviary. When they have trained around the loft, they enter on the section with boxes (those are closed), they eat and drink and then they go to the aviary. On basketing day we never show a partner, after the race they can stay together till late in the evening.

YOUNG BIRDS

Every year we breed for our own use around 150 young birds, but for 2015 this will be some more because we will race more young birds on the middle distance races.
The young birds have 5 sections. When we wean a couple young birds out of the same nest we will never put them on the same loft. We do this because also the young birds train in different groups and if you have a lot of losses with one group we still have the nest mate in the other group.
The sexes are never separated, so the young birds stay the whole year together. They are raced in nest position. Last season we tried 12 cocks and 12 hens on the widowhood system. They were coupled against older partners and to be honest we expected a lot of top performances. But we failed and those young birds did not win any top prizes. Strange was that from the moment that those young birds were of the widowhood and raced in nest position they did win top prizes. Do not ask me why… I really do not know.
Our young birds are not dark. We like to keep our young birds as close as possible to Mother Nature. What we do is to toss the young birds a lot. This is necessary because we race them in nest position and young birds in nest position never train a lot. We toss them daily, if the weather is good of course, at 15km or even 50km. A very good departure and arrival is very important on the short distance races.

CARING SYSTEM

During the breeding and racing season we use always the mixtures of three different brands.  In the racing season we feed every day 100% racing mixture enriched with some fresh grit, pink minerals and pick stone.
During the breeding season we feed once a day. During the racing season we feed twice a day. We administer 365 days in a year of garlic. Sometimes we give liquid tea or Apple vinegar. When the pigeons come home from a race we give always electrolytes.
