MARC AND GEERT POLLIN - SNELLEGEM
WRITE HISTORY IN BELGIAN PIGEON SPORT
4 x 1st NATIONAL IN RACING SEASON 2015
1st NATIONAL ACE KBDB VERY LONG DISTANCE YEARBIRDS 2015

_______________________________________________

The Pollin family lives in Snellegem.  It's not the ideal position to score on national level.  There are only 2 possibilities: good or bad.  Because they live deep in the Western Flanders, the birds of Marc really have to work hard. But in the racing season 2015, the Pollin birds had more than the top condition. They wrote Belgian history by winning 4 different national races! Next to that they won also: 1st National Ace KBDB Marathon year birds – 3rd National Champion Marathon KBDB old birds – 5th National Champion Fond  old birds – 8th National Champion KBDB Fond year birds – 9th General Champion KBDB.

The system

Their colony stands for +- 25 breeding pairs, of which 10 are housed in boxes.  During the season, the racing team counts 100 widowers and about 10 old hens that stay and are raced together with the youngsters.  They also have about 120 till 150 young birds.  At the end of November breeding starts with the breeders and race birds.  Not all the race birds are coupled end November because Marc prefers an aviary "vacation" during the moulting period (autumn and winter). This is a rather Spartan period.  They can hide for the rain but they don't get spared from a lot of wind and drought.  The result is that all weak birds disappear and during season, Marc has not many problems with head diseases.  Only the strong survive!

Marc is a good observer and he knows very well how to manage his colony.  It's not an easy thing to do because with the same birds, they race the middle distances till the heavy long distances.  The widowers all stay together so they need to make choices when it comes down to the system.  They always all get the same food.  Marc is persuaded that the pigeons themselves know very well what they need to arrive into a good condition.  Of course it's important to use quality mixtures.  At this point, many fanciers would already panic about how to prepare the pigeons for a race.  Marc thinks, they should be ready at all times and hereby he means that by feeding them constantly, the basic condition is always the same.  To Marc, it's very important that the birds get enough rest after a race.  A pigeon that did a heavy long distance race should be recovered very well before it can leave for another heavy long distance race.  When you don't respect this, you'll lose many top pigeons!

To get his widowers more "attached", he uses a mixture of candy seeds.  The widowers train twice a day for one hour while the windows stay closed and they never get to see their hen before basketing. They need to be calm!   Those birds that have to do a one day long distance race have to work every two weeks, those for the heavy long distance, have to follow a 3-weeks schedule.

The youngsters are raced by the system of the sliding door.  They're not forced but they have to do 2 national races so they get enough experience and to make a first selection possible.

The medical level

They never cure blind.  Before the breeding period and the racing season, they visit the vet.  Marc pays the vet a visit when he gets a negative feeling about their behaviour during the season. Marc keeps swearing about the daily use of Kaucabam in the drinking water.  The pigeons don't get sick fast, the intestines remain protected and the feathers are very soft.  In the silent periods, he uses tea every week and for the rest the 'good old Western Flemish water with Kaucabam'.

Years of strong results on national and international level wouldn't be possible if their colony wasn't healthy and in good condition.

Marc's own podium

At the moment, the colony is based on 3 strains; 3 top-pigeons of the colony: Dortmunter, Mortifer and Nai.  All 3 are super birds that didn't only race very well but they are also super breeders.

The Dortmunter (born in 2004) was Olympic Pigeon and he mainly scored at the top of the one day long distances (+- 600km).  The Mortifer (2003) was very good for the heavy long distances and he scored at the top on races of 600km till 900km.  Both of them still feel very well in the hand, which points at their fabulous qualities. The third crack on which this colony's based, is the strain of Nai.  He's a beautiful dark chequered cock that was born in 2004.  He was a good racer but soon he seemed to be even a better breeder with several sons, which scored with top results.

Winners look for winners and hereby there has been a breed together with the Santens Brothers from Oudenaarde, with Jos Thoné from As Genk and with the Denduyver family.  Out of this cooperation, they breed birds with which Marc succeeded. The Montauban winner is the result of such breed together.

"MONTAUBAN II " WINS 1st NATIONAL MONTAUBAN 2,129 YEARLINGS

Sire: Joske BE09-3091293 - Comes from a joint breeding of Marc Pollin and Jos Thoné. He is a son of Mortifer BE03-3002141 (Olympiad Pigeon Dortmund 2009) x Sedna I BE04-5026055 of Jos Thoné (winner of a 1st Intnat. Narbonne 5,870 p. in 2005).
Dam: Sister Nai BE08-3090193 - A full sister of this loft's current top breeder Nai. She is a daughter of Son Tony BE00-3241030 (grandson of Montauban I BE89-3382432), the sire of Nai and Cruyff (2nd Nat. Ace Pigeon Long Distance KBDB 2010) x J&B BE03-3017314, which comes from Boudewijn Jonckheere. He is an outstanding breeder and the dam of not only Nai and Cruyff but also Dortmunder (Olympiad Pigeon Dortmund 2009).

"BRUCE" WINS 1st NATIONAL ST. VINCENT

"It was like a bird of prey when he dived to the shelf", so Geert told me. Not often that you see a bird arrive like that, with so much "power"! He's named after a dear friend that died only a few weeks ago. Bruce Kehlet was an Australian fancier and his "memory" will live further in our top pigeon. How sadness and happiness can be so close together in only a few weeks.

At the moment, the morning after his "explosion", when I went to take his picture, he already was recovered. Being calm in his box or taking him in the hands was not what he liked. When you know that he flew almost a whole day in that heat, you respect such a crack. Being released at 6:45 in St-Vincent and clocked at 21:20:32h in Jabbeke (896,428 km) at a speed of 1023, 87 m/m.

He certainly isn't a big pigeon but he has very soft feathers and a well formed wing, helped him to win this victory. Also the vitality in his eyes was remarkable.

In his pedigree, again we find the super strains of the Pollin cracks: the "Dortmunter", the "Mortifer" and "Nai" are never far away. We also notice that "fresh blood" also fits well with the Pollin pigeons.  This can be noticed by the origins of his grandmother, which was breed together of the "Mortifer" and the "Sedna" (1st Int. Narbonne) of Jos Thoné. In the pedigree, we also notice that the 2 recent national winners are closely related. "Bruce"'s grandmother is nest-sister of the father of the "Montauban II".

"JOE" (10-3164068) WINS 1st NATIONAL LIBOURNE 5,020b.

Joe is a true top-pigeon and a long distance crack. He already had a super prize list but this national victory from Libourne against 5.020 old birds, is the cherry on the cake.
He arrived just after their yearling "New Belgian Pride" and was clocked at 5.03 PM after he raced a distance of 735 km, at a speed of 1250, 62 m/m. Hereby, he wins he national victory.

A grip of his fabulous prize list:

  • Brive           7e/5.286p
  • Souillac      18e/7.760p
  • Cahors       42e/6.576p
  • Tulle           81e/5.976p
  • Limoges    101e/14.271p
  • Libourne   1e/5.020 p

These are only a few of his top results but his prize list is much longer.  Now, Joe will move to the breeding loft.

He's a son of the "12", who also was a super racer with several top results on national level and son of the famous super breeder; the Dortmunder.  We also find traces of the national winner from Limoges in his pedigree. The "12" was paired to a daughter of another crack; Cadel and on mother's side, we find the origins of the national winner from Perpignan.  The best historic blood of the Pollin pigeons united in this super bird.  What a crack!

"NEW BELGIAN PRIDE" (14-3027025) WINS 1st NATIONAL LIBOURNE 5,890b. AND 1st NATIONAL ACE KBDB MARATHON YEARBIRDS

This beautiful dark chequered yearling cock was the fastest of all 10,910 birds and he arrived home, one minute before Joe. Hereby, he wins the national victory in the category of the yearlings and hereby, again he proved his qualities after he already won this year 3rd national from Agen.  With this super result, he will win the title of national ace-pigeon yearbirds too.

He raced at a speed of 1.252,75 m/m and was clocked at 17.02 PM (one minute earlier than Joe). As a young bird he was an average bird but Marc and Geert don't pay much attention to the results of the youngsters. To them, it's important that the young birds gain experience but their results are not important. When they become widowers, they have to prove their qualities and it's clear with this crack.

This year, he already won:

  • Agen          reg         1e/146p
  • Agen          prov       1e/619p
  • Agen          nat         3e/2.767p
  • Agen          intern    3e/4.485p
  • Libourne   1e  against 5.890 p and fastest against 10.910 p

On father's side, he's son of the Quatro 8, which won nice long distance results himself but he already proved his capacities as a breeder being father of the Limo 301, which not only won 1e from Tours but also top on the long distance races.

His mother is a granddaughter of the national winner from Narbonne with Marc and Gerard Santens from Oudenaarde and the strains of the birds of Eric Honoré from Snellegem.
He's son of a proven breeding pair and even though he's still young, he'll move to the breeding loft.

Hereby, this duo will have another reinforcement to their famous breeding loft and Dortmunder, Mortifer, Nai, Igor, As-Trix and other top pigeons will get new, strong neighbours.

A super result on Libourne

Besides these two national victories, they also win 3rd national with the old birds. Geert mentioned that this bird lost about 5 minutes before he entered and, in all modesty, he said that hereby, he probably lost the 2nd national. Of course, it's the clock that counts and no further excuses are important.

With the old birds, their result is really astonishing (provisional), on national level against 5,020b: 1st, 3rd, 24th, 33rd, 50th, 57th…..

At the end of our visit, Marc slowly moved his cap, scratched him on the head and said: "Now you don't have to come back this year, it has been enough…"  Yes indeed, it's almost unbelievable. There's only one word for this: impressive!
