VAN HERTEM - SCHUURMANS from NEERPELT
1 NATIONAL ACE-PIGEON MIDDLE DISTANCE OLD BIRDS KBDB 2013
By Stefan Mertens

This successful duo Henri Van Hertem and Lisette Schuurmans are well known in the Belgian pigeon sport. After a very successful racing season 2012 everybody was thinking “What would the season 2013 bring?” Well… we can say that they did even better. Their results were on all levels better.

Or what do you think of these results?

A golden frame around these champion titles would be good. It’s just pure class on short-, middle and heavy middle distance, that’s for sure.

What was the base of the success with your old and yearling birds?

Because spring period 2013 was very cold, we stayed calm with our race birds.  While other fanciers already started, we remained calm and basket our race birds for several short distance races instead of the middle distance races. The birds stayed in rhythm but were not flying too long in cold temperatures.
Once the weather was better (read higher temperature) we basket them for the middle and great middle distance races. Immediately they classified themselves in the top of the result and this went on for the rest of the racing season.

You follow the system of total widowhood?

Yes... our system is very simple. Every season, 45 pairs are ready to race on the total widowhood system. The race team was paired at the beginning of January and they bred a round of youngsters. One important thing to note is that you have to make sure that the hen doesn’t lay a second time. She is moved with one baby to the loft of the youngsters for a few days and then they immediately move to the little rest compartment, from where she is also raced during the racing season.

The hens, together with the youngsters, are darkened for the same period, so we can race the hens a little longer than the widowers who will moult faster.

Normally when the weather conditions are good cocks and hens come, begin of April, once more together for 3 days. During those three days the birds are tossed minimum twice a day. The ideal method to let them know the system of total widowhood.

All pigeons are basket weekly. If the race was too hard, we trust on our feeling and they have to fly a short distance race. We prefer to let them fly a very short distance race instead of letting them home. That is what we experienced. Also when we see that the pigeon is not recovered for 100% of that hard race, he will be 2 or 3 weeks after each other basket for that very short distance race. When we see that he is for 100% recovered he or she will be basket again for a middle of great middle distance race.

Do you have a planning for the season?

No, certainly not. We always trust on our “feeling” how the pigeons are and only the evening of basket, we decide which birds will be basket...

When a pigeon performs super on a certain distance, we prefer to let him fly the same distance every week. These strategies already let us win many titles the last few years like the national ace-pigeon middle distance old birds 2013.

How long do you race a hen?

The hens with top results are raced for maximum 2 racing seasons. Afterwards they go to the breeding loft. In that way our breeding loft remains young. Sometimes we do race 3-year old hens but these aren’t the very best ones.

Motivation

During the week the widowers stay on shelves which are installed before their closed box. On basket day the shelves are taken away and the boxes are going open. They get their nest-bowls for a few minutes and then they go into the basket. The hens are not showed to the cocks. The hens are taken, without any motivation, from their rest compartment and go into the basket.

Every week the same ritual but with success!

Young birds

Here we made a mistake last year. We were too hard with our early youngsters and so we lost too many. But you can also call it bad luck. In the morning, they were released at a distance of 20km and they all arrived back home.  In the afternoon, the weather was even better and we released them at the same place and we lost a lot.

This season, the youngsters will move back to the old fashioned loft where they stayed before. Here we will race the 1st and 2nd round ( +- 150). We don’t know yet, on which system we will race these youngsters. We’ll have to wait and see how the preparation will go but normally it will be by the sliding door.

They all will be darkened and lightened afterwards so we can race them during the whole season and they can get a lot of experience.

The food

It’s an art to keep the pigeons eating till the day of basket. That’s why we feed them 2 mixtures during the whole season.

The first mixture is a light one which contains Super diet or Gerry Plus Versele - Laga
The second is a sports mixture Mariman or Super Widowhood Beyers

How and what we feed is a certain feeling and it also depends on the temperature. When the weather is cold outside, we use more sport mix because then they need just that little bit more. Before the season starts, we give 1/4 sport and 3/4 light food.

Before the national races, they already receive 100% Sport on Tuesday evening. As an extra, we use Brilliant of Beyers, which is very important so they get that extra fat.
The last 2 days, we also give them some peanuts.

The first months, the youngsters get a lighter mixture: 1/2 light food and 1/2 sport. Once they have to race the middle distance, they get the same system as the old birds.

The medical guidance

The medical guidance of our colony is in the hands of Karlo Van Rompaey. Mostly we visit him before the season, this is in February or March. That’s what we did in spring of 2013 but we didn’t have to do anything. Everything was ok.

During the season, we had to cure not so much, certainly with the old birds. They received something against cancer once for 3 days and that was it.

Also the young ones got this cure but they also got Soludox for one week.

When we use by-products, we prefer the natural products. Once a week, we give Vior in the drinking water. Three times a week, the youngsters get yogurt over the food, an ideal product against Adeno (it doesn’t keep it away but it doesn’t come that fast). We also use Oregano, vitamineral, beer yeast and iodine during the season. When we talk about garlic, we use it almost every day in winter but during the season not that much.
