Het 882

Laarne: For this report we went to the little town Laarne (near the more known Belgian city Ghent). There we have an appointment with the national champion KBDB middle distance young birds. To win this national title you need to take your best 5 results with 1st and 2nd nominated young birds this on the middle distance races. National champion became Theofiel Ingels (Laarne) with a coefficient of 17.3999%. Second national champion is Gheyskens Oliver (Laakdal – 18.6936%) and on the third place there is Punt Frank (Vorselaar) with a coefficient of 35.6524%.

Nice detail about the win of this national championship is, that it is the first time in his whole life that Theofiel (79 years old) races birds on the middle distance. Before he was a very good short distance racer. Races from 200 till 250km were his favorite distance. But last season he decided to go a little bit further and tried it on the middle distance races. What nobody expected happened. Two young hens performed so well that their boss Theofiel could be crowned as national champion middle distance young birds.

With following 5 top results the two hens won the national championship:

Angerville 476 participants 7th - 21st
Angerville 467 participants 5
th - 15th
Angerville 410 participants 1
st - 16th
Angerville 435 participants 1
st - 4th
Angerville 361 participants 3
rd – 4th

The two young hens who won the national championship are “Asduifje” en “Het 882”. Maybe it is very interesting the publish also the whole performance list of those two superb hens:

Theofiel “I started racing pigeons when I was 12 years old. My father never had birds but my neighbor was a very fanatic fancier. He infected me with the “pigeon virus”. I raced pigeons till I married my wife Denise. She was a “pigeon lover” and therefore I stopped a few years with pigeon sport. But after some years I convinced Denise and I re-started again racing pigeons.

I had never a lot of birds and I shall never have a lot of birds. Last racing season I had 11 widowers (6 for the short distance and 5 for the middle distance). My base is my “old strain” which was formed with birds from everywhere. I had been lucky to have a good breeding couple namely “De Bonte 36” (B07-4196036) x “De Bleke 40” (B07-4196040). The two hens who won the national championship are both grandchildren of the breeding couple. Last years I invested in birds by Freddy Vertriest (Oudenaarde) and Van de Voorde-Verlinden (Baaigem).

Son Erwin is already since years the great help of his father but the son of Erwin is a soccer player and the daughter is a good athlete. Two sports who ask a lot of time of father Erwin and for that reason Erwin could not help his father any more. Father Theofiel practiced his favorite hobby alone in 2012 and therefore he only bred 40 babies.
The babies were weaned at the age of 21 till 25 days. The sexes stayed together till the 3
rd short distance race. Then they were separated and were raced following the sliding door system for the rest of the racing season.
Around middle of April, when the young birds train very good around the loft, the first tosses are programmed. In six times it goes to 15km and then with the club to the short and middle distance races. During the racing season the young birds are not tossed anymore. The young cocks train twice a day while the young hens only train once a day.
As already mentioned the young birds are raced following the “sliding door system”. On the day of basketing the door goes open and cocks and hens can “party” during a full hour. There were no extra motivation tricks such as creating dark places.
The young birds were darked from middle of March till half June, this from 5pm till 7am. Afterwards they were not lightened anymore.

Theofiel believes in a perfect caring system. Lofts are cleaned 3 till 4 times a day and the ventilation of the loft is very good. This combined with a hard selection. The selection is made in the hand and following the results. The young birds are selected till minimum 50% and from the 11 widowers only 3 can survive the next season.

When the racing season is finished Theofiel takes a dropping sample this during 5 consecutive days. This sample is send to the school of veterinary where the control the droppings on several disease such as parathyfus. Last year everything was 100% healthy. Before the start of the racing season Theofiel visits a specialized pigeon vet but again this vet could not find any disease by the birds.

During the racing season every 3 till 4 weeks Theofiel cures against trichomoniose and this by giving tablet Falagyl (metronidazole). Before the racing season starts a ornithose cure is giving. Theofiel makes also his home-made soup. He mixes onions, garlic together with brown sugar. He let this boil and after this soup is cold he mix 1 soupspoon of his soup with 1 littre of water.

Let’s explain the method with the widowers. When the racing season is finished the widowers may brood once more, but may not breed a couple of babies. When the brood is finished the boxes are closed and perches are placed . During the moulting period they get a rich moulting mix and a lot the above mentioned homemade soup. During the winter period they are not liberated.
On 10
th of December the widowers are coupled. They breed a round of young birds and when the babies are 18 days old, they hen is taken away and the widowers have to feed their babies alone.
After a short winter period there is a second coupling before the racing season of the widowers starts. This second coupling is programmed begin of March. They brood 5 days and then the widowhood is a fact.
The widowers train twice a day, each time 45 minutes. During that period the widowers cannot enter the loft. Theofiel likes that his widowers are away for about 10 minutes that they make some round around the loft and that they are a second time away for a few minutes. When the widowers come on the roof on the loft they have to fly immediately.
When the widowers come home from a race they receive a racing mixture. Theofiel buys three different brands and mix them. On Monday and Tuesday they receive depurative, on Wednesday our national champion mix 50% racing mixture and 50% depurative. The last days 100% racing mixture is on the menu. As an extra fat supplement Peanuts are also given.
